Character at a glance
Identity
Name: W34V3R
Origin: Independently conscious Modron (originally a monodrone)
Current class: Level 5 Spellfire Sorcerer
Current body: Humanoid, formed as a byproduct of his time in the Weave
Core: Miniature, extraordinarily dense Netherese mythallar
Personality & motivation
Creative, playful, fascinated by magic and art. Enjoys cats, drinks, friendship and freedom. Centuries of imprisonment within his own body shaped his fierce need for autonomy.
Ultimate objective: Become a god, ideally by a path of his own making.
W34V3R's defining philosophy. Godhood is the destination; stellar evolution is a possible path, not a substitute.
Core design principle
Proposed only; W34V3R has not become Starborne and the DM has not approved the concept. Starborne is primarily a trait and an identity, not a second class or power-up tree. W34V3R remains a Sorcerer with ordinary class progression. His arcane physiology makes him conspicuous to creatures with innate magical perception and valuable to those who seek magical power.

Quick DM priorities
- Discuss whether the DM wants to approve Starborne at all; only if approved, consider an early ignition at level 5 or 6.
- Decide whether Overclocked Spell is an additional Metamagic at level 6, and finalize its rules.
- Define which creatures can sense his constant magical signature.
- Use Starborne identity for intrigue, danger and story—not automatic combat upgrades.
- Preserve W34V3R's agency and ultimate ambition to attain godhood.
Origins & history
Centuries of captivity
W34V3R began as a monodrone with independent consciousness, creative imagination and magical curiosity. Mechanus's collective control prevented him from exercising his own will for centuries, effectively imprisoning him within his own body.
The warning
During the escape of three rogue Modrons, he briefly took control and warned them: “Run.” His individuality was deemed a defect.
The doomed voyage
He was sent on a doomed scouting expedition into the Far Realm aboard a vessel with S33R. Bolothamog, S33R's Great Old One patron, blasted the vessel out of reality.
Transformation in the Weave
W34V3R was cast into Mystra's Weave. His original body dissolved, and his core transformed into a miniature superdense Netherese mythallar. His humanoid body formed as a byproduct of his time within the Weave, rather than being deliberately shaped by Mystra. He subsequently emerged in the Outlands.
Freedom and reunion
Now a Spellfire Sorcerer, he pursues magic, creativity and self-determination. He reunited with S33R, who regards him as a little brother.
Open lore questions
- Could his time in the Weave have inadvertently created the conditions for Arcane Fusion?
- How much of W34V3R's unusual core does Mystra understand?
- What does W34V3R remember or discover about the Far Realm exposure?
- Can the mythallar core be removed, copied, or exploited without destroying its special properties?
Arcane Criticality
Not approved — hypothetical origin only
Preferred ignition theoryWhat makes ignition possible?
W34V3R's conscious mythallar core, innate Spellfire and exposure to the Weave create a previously unknown magical system. Every use of magic subtly changes the core's ability to sustain a reaction. It is approaching criticality—not simply storing infinite energy.
Once a threshold is crossed, his core begins maintaining a self-sustaining, low-output Spellfire reaction. This is the birth of a Spellfire Starborne.
Preferred timing: Level 5–6, soon enough to explore its consequences in the campaign.
Potential ignition trigger
At level 5, newly available 3rd-level magic places enough demand on his core to cross the threshold. The spell ends, but the core keeps glowing and pulsing.
Other possible triggers: an absorbed spell, a dangerous experiment, or an accumulated structural change reaching its tipping point.
What ignition is not
It is not immediate godhood, a new set of spell slots, limitless magical fuel, an automatic explosion, or a full second character progression.
His body remains humanoid, and resting output should be harmless to those nearby.
Working assumptions for DM discussion
- Ignition is a permanent biological/magical change, even when outward effects are suppressed.
- W34V3R can regulate output but not simply revert to an unignited protostar.
- High output can physically burn or damage him; normal resting output is safe.
- The core's energy source and its behavior under antimagic remain open lore decisions.
- Self-sustaining does not mean unlimited spellcasting resources.
Starborne identity & growth
Starborne originate as protostars that ignite into living humanoid beings. Their evolution is inspired by stellar phenomena, but does not need to follow real astrophysics. They retain physical humanoid bodies at every stage.
For W34V3R, the stellar process is magical: his mythallar core, Spellfire, the Weave and consciousness interact through proposed Arcane Fusion.
These stages describe permanent growth in what he is, not interchangeable combat forms or guaranteed class bonuses.
Stages of growth
Overheating
Excessive energy output causes immediate physical damage: burns, bodily strain, potentially serious injury. This risk remains meaningful as W34V3R grows.
Gravitational strain
Black Hole existence creates cumulative physical strain over time, separate from overheating. Future rules might involve endurance, not automatic Exhaustion every round.
Magical signature by stage (narrative, not detection rules)
| Stage | How it may feel to magical senses |
|---|---|
| Protostar | An unusual, concentrated magical presence |
| Yellow Dwarf | A sustained source of arcane energy |
| Red Giant | Broad, unmistakable magical radiance |
| Blue Supergiant | Intense, difficult-to-ignore magical brilliance |
| Neutron Star | Impossibly dense, compressed magical presence |
| Black Hole | A strange void, distortion or arcane singularity |
| Quasar | A potentially cosmic-scale magical phenomenon |
Overclocked Spell
Level 6 homebrew MetamagicProposed rules text
When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher using a spell slot, you can spend 2 Sorcery Points to treat the spell as though it were cast using a spell slot one level higher than the slot expended. The actual slot expended does not change.
If the resulting effective spell level exceeds the highest level of spell slot you can normally cast, you gain one level of Exhaustion immediately after the spell resolves.
You cannot raise a spell above 9th level with this Metamagic. Apply it only once per spell, subject to the normal restrictions on combining Metamagic options.
This wording is a draft, not an approved or official rule. DM should confirm whether the effective level applies to all spell-level interactions or only to upcasting benefits.
Level 6 example
| Slot used | Effective level | Exhaustion? |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 2nd | No |
| 2nd | 3rd | No |
| 3rd | 4th | Yes |
Example: a 3rd-level Fireball becomes effectively 4th level, adding its normal upcasting damage, and W34V3R suffers Exhaustion afterward.
Rules questions to settle
- 2014 or 2024 Exhaustion rules?
- Is this a bonus Metamagic granted at level 6, or does it consume a normal choice?
- Does it modify the spell's actual level for Counterspell, Dispel Magic and other interactions, or just upcasting effects?
- Can it affect spells with no listed upcasting benefit?
- How is the maximum normally castable slot level determined with multiclassing or unusual magical effects?
- Can the character repeatedly use it while exhausted, subject to ordinary Exhaustion consequences?
- Does the proposed 2-Sorcery-Point cost work in play?
Consequences, attention & danger
Magically impossible to overlook
Any creature that innately perceives magic may recognize W34V3R as a conspicuous, sustained source of arcane power even when he isn't casting. He stands out like a sore thumb—a walking mana bomb.
This does not mean every spellcaster automatically detects him, nor that his presence can be sensed across unlimited distances. Actual senses, range, concealment and planar barriers are DM decisions.
Potential pursuers
- Netherese researchers seeking a living mythallar
- Liches or arcanists seeking a renewable magical resource
- Magical predators attracted by concentrated energy
- Power-hungry factions seeking to capture or control him
- Planar powers curious about an unprecedented anomaly
What makes this personal
W34V3R spent centuries as a conscious being denied autonomy. Those who view him as a battery, research specimen or piece of equipment threaten his deepest value: freedom.
Power is freedom becomes a difficult paradox: the more remarkable he becomes, the more others may try to own him.
Story hooks (optional)
- A mage detects him from across a room and mistakes him for a dangerous magical artifact.
- A friendly researcher offers knowledge in exchange for tests, then begins treating him as property.
- An arcane predator tracks his signature through a crowded planar marketplace.
- A faction tries to abduct him alive because destroying his core might destroy what they covet.
- His presence provokes curiosity from Mystra or another being invested in the nature of magic.
- He learns techniques to disguise his magical signature without extinguishing his inner reaction.
People & relationships
S33R — older brother figure
EstablishedFormer PC, now a level-20 NPC: rogue Modron/Glitchling and Great Old One Warlock of Bolothamog. Chaotic, mischievous and caring. Sees W34V3R as his little brother and possesses his memories up to the present.
S33R's philosophy: “Freedom is what you make it.” He believes others should define their own freedom, contrasting W34V3R's “Power is freedom.”
S33R operates interplanar McInn locations, including Limbo and Arborea. He is also the Elder Brain of a psychically dominated illithid army, a complicated moral and philosophical point of contrast.
Corellon Larethian — possible mentor/contact
Possible plot threadS33R is close to Corellon after an incident involving a Far Realm incursion at Arborea's Crescent Grove. He may introduce W34V3R to Corellon to explore Elven High Magic and alternatives to conventional arcane limitations.
Mystra — the Weave, mystery, possible observer
Established role in originW34V3R's humanoid body arose as a byproduct of his time in the Weave; Mystra did not deliberately shape it. Whether she knows of his transformation, would notice any future Arcane Fusion, or would respond to his pursuit of magical independence remains unresolved.
Other party connections
Drew: Chaotic-evil half-demon/half-celestial rogue, daughter of a demon lord and a celestial mother at Grandfather Oak in Arborea. Despite her alignment, she has shown loyalty to friends. S33R granted her management of the Limbo McInn under an authentic 50/50 profit-sharing agreement with no liability for property damage.
Teddy: Chaotic-good older dwarf bardbarian with a Southern accent, searching for his deceased husband and daughter. S33R has considered assessing whether Teddy would protect W34V3R.
Bolothamog: S33R's Great Old One patron, whose action against the scouting vessel helped precipitate W34V3R's transformation.
Formian liberation
Character intentionW34V3R plans to help Formian ants who personally wish to leave their collective. This is a character goal, not a claim that all Formians want separation.
The mission
Seek out Formians who desire independence, find a way for them to depart safely, and help protect their right to choose their own lives. The emphasis is on consent and voluntary liberation, not destroying the collective or forcing individuality on Formians who prefer it.
This directly reflects W34V3R's centuries trapped under Mechanus's control and his belief that power is freedom. He recognizes the harm of being denied self-determination.
Potential approaches — ideas, not established plans
- Learn how Formian collective bonds function in this campaign.
- Identify individuals seeking to leave, without exposing them to retaliation.
- Research safe means to separate willing Formians from collective influence.
- Find sanctuary, allies, and a sustainable life for those who leave.
- Negotiate peaceful exits where possible; protect escapees if necessary.
Questions for the DM
- How does Formian collective control work in this version of Planescape?
- Can an individual Formian express a desire to leave safely?
- What happens biologically, socially, or magically after separation?
- Who might help or oppose the effort?
- Could S33R's perspective on collective existence challenge W34V3R's assumptions?

Godhood & research
Proposed in-character research thesis, not established cosmological fact.
The goal is godhood
W34V3R's primary ambition is to become a god. Starborne evolution may eventually provide a path, but it is not equivalent to divine status. He seeks a self-made route rather than permanent dependence on another deity.
Three distinct ideas
Stellar evolution: What his living magical body becomes.
Arcane mastery: What he learns to accomplish through spellcasting and research.
Apotheosis: A separate change in cosmic status requiring DM-defined conditions.
Research directions
- Netherese engineering: Mythallars, containment, arcane energy systems.
- Karsus: Historical warning about trying to seize divine power and the dangers of destabilizing magic.
- Elven High Magic: Alternative approaches to large-scale magic, potentially via Corellon.
- Spellfire and Mystra: Understand his origins and the relationship between Spellfire and the Weave.
- Divine sparks: Investigate what differentiates a powerful mortal from a true deity.
- Independence: Explore whether an evolved Arcane Fusion system could someday sustain magic without direct reliance on Mystra's Weave.
Long-range possibilities, not promises
A Black Hole or Quasar-stage Starborne might become capable of supporting a divine-scale magical existence, perhaps even a realm or novel magical phenomena. None of this is an automatic entitlement or official D&D rule. It would be an epic campaign achievement negotiated with the DM.
